         National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) hosted the awards ceremony of Outstanding Contribution Award for the Oceans(海洋貢獻獎) on November 25^th. Outstanding Contribution Award for the Oceans 2022 goes to Professor Philip Li-Fan Liu(劉立方), Academician of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. Prof. Liu is awarded for his contribution to coastal oceanography and engineering, which promotes construction for tsunami disaster prevention.

Tai-Wen Hsu, president of NTOU, appreciated Prof. Liu’s devotion to coastal engineering.

          Professor Philip L-F Liu Prof Liu received an ScD degree in 1974 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prof. Liu was the Director of the School of CEE at Cornell University from July 2009 to June 2015 and served as the Vice President for Research and Technology at National University of Singapore from August 2015 to July 2019. As an internationally recognized researcher in the fields of water wave theories, tsunami dynamics, wave-breaking processes, sediment transport processes, and interactions of water waves with structures, Prof Liu’s research approach integrates analytical, computational, and experimental methodologies.

          Professor Liu’s results of researches are also widely applied in coastal engineering. His COMCOT (Cornell Multi-grid Coupled Tsunami model) is adopted as the tsunami-preventing system in countries. His other model COBRAS (Cornell-Breaking-Waves-and Structures), is also frequently applied in coastal engineering research.

          In the Outstanding Contribution Award for the Oceans awards ceremony, Tai-Wen Hsu(許泰文), president of NTOU, appreciated Prof. Liu’s devotion to coastal engineering. President Hsu also encouraged students to follow the way how Prof. Liu researches. Professor Liu noted his honor in talent cultivation. He enjoys having over thirty Doctors-to-be as his coworkers, most of whom dedicate themselves to education work. He also appreciated his wife, Distinguished Professor Christine A. Shoemaker, for supporting his academic desire and sharing their love of education. Former Minister of Ministry of Education, Academician Ovid Tzeng(曾志朗) congratulated Professor Liu’s winning the award which represents marine and Taiwan the most. Professor Liao also wished Outstanding Contribution Award for the Oceans successfully raised citizens’ attention to marine affairs.
