Academician I Chiu Liao--the first researcher to complete the artificial propagation of mullet in the world shares his knowledge
National Taiwan Ocean University(NTOU) held a "Mullet and Its Aquaculture Book Sharing Session" on October 4th to promote marine science studies especially in Aquaculture profession.
The Editor-in-chief of the book, Academician I Chiu Liao is the first researcher in the world to complete the artificial propagation of mullet. The "complete culture" was achieved in 1976. "Complete culture" can be defined as rearing for a complete generation cycle of fish from eggs to larvae, juvenile, and adult, to spawners and finally to reproduce the successive generations in captivity.
The species recognized morphologically as Mugil cephalus is commercially important and cosmopolitan fish. At present, to avoid raising a large school of mullet that have a low ovary yield, there is a need to screen the monosex culture and mitotype screening, the genetics, nutrition requirements and environmental factors that affect mullet ovary development need further investigation in order to further improve the economics of this important industry.
In next few days, delegation of Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. will visit NTOU to exchange the ideas on Aquaculture, marine science, and SDGs.
NTOU is an ocean-based university, but not limited to the ocean and also an internationally well-known university with excellence in teaching and featured research.
