NTOU Showcases "Blue Technology" for a Sustainable Aquatic Future at 2023 TIOFIS

TIOFIS2023

The grand opening of the 2023 Taiwan International Ocean and Fisheries Industry Show is scheduled for August 31st at the Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 1. This event coincides with the 70th anniversary of National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) and is themed "One World, One Health." NTOU takes center stage with a strong focus on "Blue Technology," consistently introducing fresh ideas and research breakthroughs to a global audience.

As the International Ocean and Fisheries Industry Show enters its ninth edition, NTOU is set to showcase more than 20 cutting-edge technologies, in collaboration with six companies from the NTOU Industry-Academia Alliance. This collaborative effort underscores NTOU's dedication to fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

The NTOU exhibition is thoughtfully divided into three zones: "Diverse Health (多元健康)," "Smart Aquaculture (智慧水產)," and "Sustainable Future (永續未來)." In the "Diverse Health" zone, solutions to industry challenges related to the marine environment, animal health, and human health take the spotlight. Professor Han-Jia Lin(林翰佳), from the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, in collaboration with BiOptic Inc. (光鼎生技), introduces a user-friendly nucleic acid testing platform for the rapid diagnosis of animal diseases and genetic information. Visitors can experience this convenient technology with 20 free tests daily. Professor Ming-Wei Lu(呂明偉) from the Department of Aquaculture has developed an oral nucleic acid preparation for preventing viral diseases in fish and controlling sex reversal in shrimp. This technology has received numerous awards and has been successfully transferred to the industry, addressing various health-related concerns.

In the "Smart Aquaculture" zone, NTOU presents intelligent solutions for the aquaculture industry in the era of AI. Vice President of NTOU, Prof. Fan-Hua Nan (冉繁華), from the Department of Aquaculture, introduces the "Intelligent Production Decision System," which monitors and intelligently assesses over ten environmental risk factors such as water quality, dissolved oxygen, and temperature, providing optimal recommendations for aquaculture farmers. Director Jung-Hua Wang (王榮華) from the AI Research Center, along with Assistant Professors Te-Hua Hsu (徐德華) and Professor Hung-Tai Lee (李宏泰) from the Department of Aquaculture, demonstrate image analysis technology to monitor the growth status of abalones and the use of environmental eDNA and barcode data for seedling releases and marine ecological monitoring. Associate Professor Chang-Wen Huang (黃章文) from the Department of Aquaculture, in collaboration with Ten Great Agricultural Awardee Mr. Yi-Sheng Huang (黃壹聖), has developed the latest Taiwanese sea bream smart aquaculture system, complete with automatic harvesting and oxygenation modules, successfully enhancing seedling farming management and reducing labor.

In the "Sustainable Future" zone, NTOU showcases Professor Meng-Chou Lee (李孟洲)'s development of seaweed cultivation techniques, including Gracilaria, for applications in marine afforestation and carbon sequestration. Professor Wu Chang-Jer (吳彰哲), a special appointment professor in the Department of Food Science, presents technology for extracting and processing special active ingredients from algae for use in antiviral health products. Professor Yi-Cheng Huang (黃意真) further translates polysaccharides from Porphyra into microneedle injection devices, applying marine sustainable materials to medical and cosmetic fields. Additionally, several faculty members from the Department of Food Science have established the "North Region Aquacultural Product Value-added Proofing Center in NTOU (北區水產加值打樣中心)" with support from the Ministry of Agriculture. They showcase mussel extract, low-temperature frying technology, and aquatic products developed for the elderly during this exhibition.

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of National Taiwan Ocean University, NTOU is collaborating with the Taiwan Marine Biotechnology Society. During the Taiwan International Ocean and Fisheries Industry Show, from September 1st, they will jointly host the 4th Marine Aquaculture Technology Forum at Room 401, Hall 1 of the Nangang Exhibition Center. The forum will follow the format of an international conference and align with NTOU's exhibition theme of "Creating a Diverse, Intelligent, Healthy, and Sustainable Future for Aquaculture." It will feature 11 captivating presentations by domestic and international industry-academic research experts. For the first time, a poster paper display area will be set up at the Taiwan International Ocean and Fisheries Industry Show, providing students from various schools with a platform to showcase their latest research results, enabling industries and the public to witness how Taiwan's marine and fisheries research will be passed on from one generation to the next, continually contributing to the world through technology.

Throughout the Taiwan International Ocean and Fisheries Industry Show, which runs from August 31st to September 2nd, NTOU will not only showcase academic and technical achievements at Booth K815 but will also establish the "NTOU Fresh Marketplace (海大鱻市集)" at Booth J923. This marketplace will offer products developed by NTOU's value-added sampling center, as well as high-quality seafood products such as grouper, mackerel, and white shrimp produced by three NTOU-derived startups, all available for purchase. Visitors are encouraged to explore this marketplace. Additionally, NTOU will host business technology matching events and student employment matching activities during the exhibition period, reaffirming its commitment to nurturing talent and conducting technological research in the maritime and fisheries industry with innovative thinking and industry service in the next 70 years.
